Sheffalie Jhaveri and the Quest for Better

For Sheffalie Jhaveri, design has never been about arriving — it's a quest for better, one considered decision at a time. Her Mumbai-based practice, Rutam, has followed that pursuit since 1989, and in 2025, extended it into furniture.

Design found her early, if indirectly. As a child, Sheffalie trained as a horse rider and classical dancer under Padmashri Guru Sunaina Hazarilalji — and growing up in a business family immersed in art and aesthetics, an eye for form and proportion came naturally. She read English Literature at Mumbai University while completing her diploma in Interior Design at Sophia Polytechnic, and took on her first project before she'd even graduated. There was no looking back — design won out over journalism, and in 1989, Rutam began.

For Sheffalie, plan is everything; design follows from there. Every project is approached with thought and intent — honest craftsmanship, high-end finishes, and a timeless appeal that marries functionality with aesthetics. It is a practice built on simplicity and clarity, removing the unnecessary to let the essential come through: thoughtful proportion, materials chosen to enhance a space rather than overpower it, rooms designed to hold a feeling of calm.

That sensibility runs through the full scope of the work — end-to-end, across interior architecture, interiors, styling and landscape design, with each space crafted to evoke comfort and harmony while respecting the land it sits on. The results read as calm, composed and reflective: natural materials, earthy tones, simple modern lines that favour elegance over ostentation. Rutam isn't chasing trends; it's building toward timeless craftsmanship, and toward relationships with clients rooted in trust, transparency and a shared vision — delivering on what's promised, without compromise.

As a designer, Sheffalie says she has no stops. Maximalism and minimalism, done well, can both be breathtaking, and neither is really about how much a space holds. Maximalism, to her, is playful experimentation and self-expression — a burst of colour, shape and texture, some eccentricity, a space with real character, most honest when the client is a collector in their own right. Minimalism is for the client who loves quiet luxury: everything kept for function and intent, nothing held onto without meaning, enhanced with quality that asks little upkeep in return.

In mid-2025, that same restlessness led Rutam to a furniture line of its own — beginning, fittingly, with tables. Every table has a task; its dimensions and utility can't be argued with. Add a design to that, and it becomes something more than a table — a pièce de résistance. It's the newest chapter in the same pursuit: a little more thought, a little more intent, a little better.
